Johnson and Johnson Vision’s (J&Js) breakthrough soft contact lens for myopia control, Acuvue Abiliti 1-Day, newly released data reveals over 55% of treated eyes showed no clinically meaningful myopia progression* over a three-year period¹.
Abiliti 1-Day is the first daily disposable silicone hydrogel soft contact lens specifically designed to slow the progression of myopia in children¥2 and is now available across New Zealand and Australia. It is about twice as effective at managing myopia compared to a dual focus lens**3. And, over three years, it reduced axial elongation by an average of 0.31 mm.^1
Unique RingBoost technology
This proven effectiveness comes from the lens’s novel RingBoost technology, which utilises non co-axial optics to create myopic retinal defocus and help manage myopia without compromising visual quality. More than 95% of children wearing Abiliti 1-Day achieved visual acuity of 6/6 or better.§4 (Fig 1). “Most multifocal or dual focus style lenses are limited in the amount of plus that can be incorporated into the treatment zone as the ADD power is focused on the line of sight. Abiliti 1-Day’s non coaxial optics focus OFF the line of sight. This means we can have +7D in the treatment ring and a +10D central boost to maximise the myopia management effect,” said Dr Emma Gillies, J&J’s Head of Professional Education.

Fit, comfort designed for kids
The lenses were also specifically designed for the paediatric eye, with a small diameter for easy insertion and removal‡5, but made from the same silicone hydrogel material, senofilcon A, as Acuvue Oasys 1-Day, which have never been beaten in comfort in six clinical studies posted on ClinicalTrials.govμ.
In a randomised, controlled, crossover study:
Compared to spectacles, wearing contact lenses also boosted kids’ self-confidence and improved both their school and sports performance6,7. “Contact lens wear dramatically improves how children and teens feel about their appearance and participation in activities, leading to greater satisfaction with their refractive error correction,” concluded lead author Dr Jeffery Walline, Associate Dean, Ohio State University’s College of Optometry, in his study7.
“The lenses are made from senofilcon A material, which is easy to handle and very comfortable. Optometrists who are fitting the lenses tell us that children are finding insertion and removal of the lenses very easy, which means a less stressful start to the day for both the kids and the parents! Because the lenses are so comfortable, children are wearing the lens for longer during the day. The only intervention that works is the one that the child actually wears, a comfortable material leads to better compliance,” said Dr Gillies.
“The 3 year clinical trial results are very exciting and we are delighted to help optometrists confidently fit this revolutionary new design, confident in the knowledge that they can slow their patients’ myopia progression with a comfortable and easy-to-handle contact lens.”
