Welcome to RANZCO NZ Annual Scientific Meeting 2025!

April 5, 2025 Dr Verona Botha

Kia ora koutou. As convenor of the 75th RANZCO New Zealand Branch Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM), I am thrilled to extend a warm invitation for you to attend the 2025 meeting in Rotorua from 30–31 May. This year, we're crafting an unmissable event that embodies our theme, ‘Clarity of vision, balanced life, thriving in ophthalmology’, promising not only world-class education but also a truly unique experience in the heart of New Zealand's geothermal wonderland.

The RANZCO NZ ASM’s rich history, spanning 75 meetings, speaks volumes about its enduring relevance and value. We will be building on that legacy with a meticulously crafted programme featuring three plenary sessions and concurrent streams tailored to ophthalmologists and ophthalmic nurses. Expect nothing less than exceptional presentations from leading international and local experts.

The scientific programme, curated by our scientific programme chair, Professor Charles McGhee, promises to be both stimulating and informative. We are privileged to welcome an exceptional array of keynote speakers: Professor Soon Phaik Chee from Singapore, a leading authority on complex cataract and ocular inflammation, will share her extensive expertise; New York’s Professor Laura Balcer, a renowned expert in neurology and neuro-ophthalmology, whose groundbreaking research focuses on MS and concussion; Assistant Professor Julie Schallhorn from San Francisco will provide cutting-edge insights into cataract and refractive surgery; Lori Pacheco, clinical director of Cape Cod Eye Surgery and Laser Center Massachusetts, is a highly experienced peri-operative nurse and associate director of Volunteer Experience for ORBIS, who will offer a unique perspective on global eyecare. The collective expertise of these speakers promises to enrich our understanding and inspire engaging discussions throughout the conference.

RANZCO Rotorua’s social programme will create lasting memories: start the conference with our welcome function on Thursday evening, then prepare to love our conference dinner at Skyline Rotorua's Stratosfare Restaurant and Bar. Imagine superb dining accompanied by breathtaking panoramic views, all accessible via a scenic gondola ride – a highlight we are incredibly excited to offer!

The Energy Events Centre venue is perfectly situated to allow you to experience Rotorua’s unique charm. The city offers a wealth of activities – the majestic Redwoods Whakarewarewa Forest, the vibrant food scene, its world-famous thermal pools and spas and exhilarating mountain-biking trails.

Adding to the excitement, this year marks the debut of our video competition, providing a creative outlet for our attendees. And for our registrars, a dedicated teaching day featuring our keynote speakers will be held on the Thursday before the meeting.

As always, we are immensely grateful for the crucial support of our industry partners and sponsors. Their contributions are essential to the success of our meeting. Be sure to visit the vibrant sponsors’ area, where you’ll discover the latest advancements and innovations in ophthalmic technology and services. This area provides a fantastic opportunity to network, learn and engage with leading industry representatives.

Furthermore, the CPD team will be on hand to assist with the recording of your CPD activities and, in a first for the meeting, you can complete and sign off your annual conversation on site. A convenient opportunity to fulfil this important requirement early!

My sincere thanks to our dedicated organising committee: Drs Liz Insull, Cheefoong Chong and Peter Hadden, Professor Charles McGhee, Associate Professor James McKelvie, Renee Stapleton and Karen McLean for their invaluable contributions to the success of this event.

Ngā mihi nui.

Dr Verona Botha, RANZCO NZ Branch ASM committee chair and convenor 2025
